AbstractMPEG-2, developed by the MPEG of the ISO/IEC, is the international standard for video codec. It is intended for applications requiring bit-rates of 2 Mbps. Traditionally, realtime MPEG-2 video encoding can be done either using special-purpose hardware or generalpurpose software solution. However, the hardware-based encoder has the following key disadvantages: is very expensive, is less flexible than software-based and is optimized for a particular algorithm. Therefore, the software based is more interesting. In this study, we implemented the parallel processing to improve the performance of real-time MPEG-2 video encoding algorithm based on the software solution. We also presented the different implementations including Message-passing programming, Shared-memory programming, Data parallelism and Functional parallelism. These implementations were performed on the HP Convex Exemplar SPP1600 using the SPMD paradigm. Finally, the results which achieved from our experiments, are discussed to find the best solution.
