AbstractAnthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases enhance the natural greenhouse effect and lead to serious environmental issues such as increase in global mean sea level, change in vegetation zones and retreated permafrost zones etc. Since the major anthropogenic source of greenhouse gases emission is energy production and use, it is imperative to understand how different energy sources differ with respect to greenhouse gases emission. The role of biomass energy technology options, and the resulting GHG emissions mitigation opportunities in the field of energy production are to be closely observed to explore the potential of environmental benefits. Different biomass options, including energy plantation in degraded lands, has been investigated for their performance with established as well as emerging energy technologies. Resulting GHG mitigation and the cost of mitigation are looked at in order to observe the opportunity of implementing such biomass based energy production in some ten countries of the Asian region. The substitution cost of fossil fuel based energy systems with biomass based ones are calculated as the cost difference between continued use of fossil fuel at current prices and the use of biomass. With the availability of unutilized or under utilized biomass energy sources in the countries of focus, the potential of reaping a substantial environmental benefits through energy use of biomass is of higher order, but the sustainable consumption of these resources have to be ensured in order to make use of the available resources in a continuous basis.
