AbstractThe operation of a storage based reservoir modifies the downstream flow considerably in the low flow season. If there are a network of reservoirs in a basin then the downstream flow augmentation due to the combined operation of the upper reservoirs can be of considerable amount to be used for other purposes like irrigation, water supply or power production. The case for this study are the two proposed storage based reservoirs located in the upper tributaries and an existing irrigation project located at the outlet of Gandaki Basin, Nepal. The reservoirs are proposed for power production but at the same time it will augment the flow at the Irrigation Project that can be used for the irrigation as an additional benefit. Based on the well known Stochastic Dynamic Programming (SDP) optimization technique, a SDP Model is developed which is used for finding the optimal operation policy of the reservoirs. Using the so generated operation policy and a synthetically generated long term inflow series, the modified flow downstream of the reservoirs are simulated and mass balance equation is used to calculate the additional flow, with its reliability, at the irrigation project due to the operation of the two reservoirs. The additional amount of flow over the dry season (Jan to May) is nearly one forth to double of the existing supply available at the irrigation Project with a reliability of 80 % and it recommends strongly to the priority in the national plan for the construction of these reservoirs.
