Abstract | This study is an attempt to adopt appropriate environmental impact assessment methodologies for assessment of the impacts of Stung Chinit water resources development project in Cambodia. Several methodologies for rapid identification of environmental impacts have been examined. A list of environmental parameters used in investigation of impact assessment of water resources development projects in Thailand is used as guideline for this study. Data and information related to the existing environmental conditions of the project area are reviewed and investigated. Moreover, questionnaires were carried out to support the determination of the relative importance of various environmental parameters and understanding the environmental conditions as well. Computer program SPSS was used to analyze the results of opinion survey. Checklist and matrix were selected and applied for impacts assessment of Stung Chinit project. It was noted that due to the lack of data, manpower and budget, it is difficult to undertake elaborate impact studies in Cambodia and the environmental report are usually of general nature or highly speculative. However, it was recommended that rapid identification techniques like the use of checklists and matrices are the most appropriated for impact assessment of Stung Chinit water resources development project, but their use should be handled with flexibility. |
