AbstractForestry resources play important roles especially for those who are living in the countryside. Therefore, such resources require a good management and conservation way to manage and conserve in order to serve people for long time use. Actually, this study is to assess the potential of community forestry at a time of rapidly increasing deforestation and looks at the process of managing as well as conserving forests by selected communities. The basic idea of the study has been carried out at a village where traditional community forestry is practiced; at the village where community forestry has been promoted by a non-government organization (CIDSE); and at two villages where community forestry has been promoted by a government organization (LSFP). Data were collected through questionnaire surveys and structured interviews. Besides, the author stayed at the four villages and gathered data through informal interviews. In traditional community forestry, the forest areas had diminished, whereas in the other three promoted community forestry examples forest cover had remained. Therefore, promoted community forestry strategies have been successful in forest management and conservation. The three cases under study are described in details. The physical conditions and historical background in relation to forest issues of each village are outlined followed by a description of community organizations and their role in community forestry. The imp011ance of people's potential in community forestry management, external supporting organizations, economic status, group participation, forestry activity and people's attitudes toward forest have been highlighted as significant key factors of community forestry. Based on the findings, the requisite factors for community forestry development have been recommended and outlined for the best model of community forestry management, which is the most appropriate to use in Savannakhet Province.
