Abstract | The proper management of national parks is indispensable for maintaining biodivertsity of the country's unique natural environment for future economic development. Ba Vi is one of ten national parks in Vietnam. In the recently, there are some urgent socio-environmental issues, which are impacting on the environmental integrity of the Park. The major objective of this study is to assess impacts of local communities who live in the buffer zone on the Park, as well as, the villagers' perceptions toward natural resources conservation and the Park. The study used Rapid Rural Appraisal as a main teclmique. Three major problems were found in the research. The first is the forest protection and management at BVNP has not been conducted in the appropriate way. The second is the local people still keep negative perceptions and attitudes towards natural resources conservation, so that they were not in a position to take interest in resource conservation. The third is the local people depend heavily on forest products inside the Park. In order to solve these problems, reasonable solutions should be applied as follows: (1) location of land and the pine forest areas should be addressed directly on local people; (2) a help the local people to increase their income from home gardens by introducing and selecting suitable species of trees and crops are an urgent solution; (3) a conservation education for local communities and school children should be provided. Therefore, their perceptions and attitudes towards natural resources conservation will be improve. |
