AbstractAmong various market entries in the international marketplace, licensing is considered to be better than doing nothing. In addition, it is also an effective way to protect trademarks abroad, that is to protect the image and then the profit of entrepreneur. In Vietnam, the counterfeiting and trademark infringement are still a problem. That forces international firms to have a good preparation by gaining knowledge about the legal and business environment in Vietnam. It is known that Vietnam's laws are protective to intellectual property including trademark rights. Since the existence of the newly promulgated Civil Code, the ownership of internationally registered trademarks can be more guaranteed. For licensing its trademarks, every international firm has its own strategy in different countries as different markets. In licensing their trademarks in Vietnam, international firms have always made an attempt to set up a strong relationship with their licensees. Their trademarks are often licensed to their joint ventures with local firms. It is not only a way to protect effectively their trademarks but a strategic preparatory step for their future international performance.
