AbstractTo meet the challenges of increasing market competition, diverse demands, shorter product life cycles and uncertain industrial environment, the manufacturing engineers need to employ several concepts and techniques, particularly, new production management techniques and the flexible automation supported by efficient integrated information systems. However, a sizeable number of problems related to the development and implementation of integrated systems and techniques still remain unresolved. Thus, there is a need for developing integrated systems capable of integrating the engineering functions with production planning and control so as to achieve an integrated information system for CIM. A Computer Integrated Manufacturing system comprises of machines & equipment and an appropriate communication network to provide for hardware integration, computerized production planning and control systems, computerized engineering techniques, etc. For total system integration, the two sub-systems, namely, the Integrated Engineering (IE) and Integrated Production Planning and Control (IPP&C) must be integrated. Individually, achieving an Integrated Production Planning and Control (IPP&C) system would involve the integration of a number of planning and control functions, e.g., Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII), quality control, IS09000 QMS (Quality Management System), capacity planning, tool management, maintenance management, NC program management, etc. The integration scheme, proposed herein, lays down a framework for the integration of some selected functions of IPP&C subsystem of CIM. Out of different kinds of integration, this study aims at establishing the schemes for the functional integration, or, the decision tool integration. In this thesis, the author has developed a scheme for Production Planning and Control so as to achieve total system integration.
