AbstractA great deal of research has been done on Multiobjective Optimization and many more studies have been carried out on Simulation. They, though, have been done on these two methodologies in isolation from each other. This dissertation is built on the premise that the efficacy of Multiobjective Optimization and Simulation, when applied as an integrated methodology is significantly enhanced. This research is aimed at integrating Multiobjective Optimization into a Simulation environment in the context of a Factory Layout Problem. The Factory Layout Problem is modeled as a three-objective optimization problem Maximizing Total Layout Flexibility, Minimizing Total Travel Time, and Maximizing Total Closeness Rating Scores. Flexibility, as it applies to layout, is based on a new concept of Reachability. The problem is structured as a Nonlinear Goal Programming model and Genetic Algorithms are used to derive solutions. The concept of integrated optimization-simulation is introduced, implemented and applied for the Facility Layout Problem specifically dealing with layout design. In the integrated model, simulation is treated as a monitoring tool, which observes and records system performance; optimization module is the driving tool, which performs evaluation and points out the next alternative for the system. For the layout design level, the global criterion concept is selected to formulate a fitness function, which minimizes the sum of the weighted deviations from the individual objectives' ideal values. The optimization model is then integrated into the Simulation platform of SIMPLE++, an Object Oriented, and full animation simulator. New simulation blocks are created and introduced into the overall framework. The integrated Multiobjective Optimization - Simulation Factory Layout Methodology is then applied to a specific case of a company in Vietnam. The case study has confirmed the efficacy of the integrated optimization - simulation methodology in designing the layout of a modern manufacturing system.
