Abstract | This research attempts to identify and investigate factors that influence investment decision-making by firms to conduct FDI in the Bangladesh power sector and to identify the key barriers that deter FDI in this sector. In addition, this study has attempted to examine whether characteristics of power plants, including ownership (joint venture, wholly owned subsidiary, and consortium), firm size (small, medium, and large), and contract periods lead to different sets of FDI determinants/barriers when conducting FDI in the power sector. And lastly, this research suggests key policy recommendations for sustainable FDI generation in the Bangladeshi power sector. To arrive at these objectives, this study has used a mixed method approach (interviews based on a semi-structured questionnaire). In addition, descriptive statistics and analytical tools such as T-test, ANOV A and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) have been used for data analysis and make policy recommendations. Finding from this study suggests that regulatory aspects are the most influential for firms when engaging in FDI in the power sector, followed by economic and financial, political, and societal aspects. In terms of barriers political aspect carries the highest weight, which is followed by economic and financial, societal and regulatory aspects. In terms of individual factors that help influence decision-making by firms to conduct FDI, government's commitment to contracts, land acquisition, and tax exemption are the most important. On the contrary land acquisition/rent/lease of land, corruption and political interferences are the main factors that deter FDI from the power sector. In addition, firm-level characteristics, including firm ownership, firm size, and contract period, are important in ranking the determinants of conducting FDI into this sector.
