Abstract | An approach of managing forest areas through strictly banning all forms of resource use and exploitation is considered ineffective in places where local people highly rely on using forest resources for their daily livelihoods. Many failures can be indicated by on going resource degradation as well as creating of severe conflicts between local people and responsible authorities. The study was conducted in three villages located in the area of Pha Taem National Park, which represented the effect of the park establishment on community-based forest use and management systems. Data gathering for this research work was based on both secondary and primary sources. Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques were conducted to collect relevant data during fieldwork in the study area. This research focuses on the study of current significant community-based forest management systems consisting of how local people use and manage for forest resources and the local institutional structure and mechanisms to control access and for decision making. The findings indicate the significance and existence of community-based forest management systems. Collaborative forest management through a proposed process for studying the feasibility of a user-centered approach as well as empowerment to establish this particular area as a pilot area is recommended. |
