Abstract | China's economy and market were closed and exclusively centrally-planned before 1979. Since then, the Chinese Government has executed the Economic Reform and Open-door policy for the purpose of improving domestic economy and living standards and the urgent need to participate in the world economic integration and globalization. Continuous growth has been achieved in the utilization of foreign investment. The joint venture is the most common f01m of foreign investment in China. Most joint venture companies are run successfully. However, some of the N companies are facing problems and difficulties in operation, which will influence future foreign investment in China. Very little research has been carried out, especially in the Chinese context. This study serves the best introduction to the investment environment and regulations in China as well as to the policies of the Chinese government on encouraging foreign investment are also introduced. Then suggestions are made to foreign investors for their guidance. This research attempts to identify and analyze the problems, both at the general management level and at the functional level, which are specific to joint ventures operating in the Chinese business environment. Data were collected from in-depth interviews with managers in two joint ventures in the offset duplicator industry and aquaculture industry respectively. One of the cases surveyed is a successful one, while the other failed. Through the analysis of the successful one, the resolution strategies for successfully run a joint venture in China are generated. Finally, by comparing the two joint ventures surveyed, recommendations are made to Chinese partners, foreign partners and counterpart partners for how to avoid of failure in the operation and run joint ventures successfully in China. |
