AbstractThe research study assessed the characteristics of five identified small high-tech firms in the Philippines which is composed of four electronics-based firms and one software developer firm. The study also identified the type of product innovations developed by these firms based on Henderson and Clark's framework for defining innovations. And finally factors which affect these innovations were determined. It was found out that the characteristics of the identified small high-tech firms in the Philippines are basically the same compared with that in other countries. However, unlike the small high-tech firms in other countries which exploit emerging technologies, the identified small high-tech exploit mature technologies. This affects the type of innovations developed by these firms which are predominantly incremental innovations. It was found out that the business environment in terms of dynamism, hostility and external linkages significantly influenced these firms' innovation outputs.
