AbstractUsing seven different types of vertical prefabricated band drains, electro-osmotic consolidation tests were performed on undisturbed soft Bangkok clay samples. The horizontal coefficient of consolidation was determined using the Rowe cell apparatus. Conventional consolidation and electro-osmotic consolidation tests were performed without using any drains and the results of these tests were compared with that of tests with drains. The horizontal coefficient of consolidation, Ch increased with decrease in vertical stress and increase in voltage gradient. The void ratio reduced with increase in effective stress and increase in voltage gradient. All tests indicated an increase in shear strength after consolidation. The shear strength increase was highest when Hitek Flo drain and Colbond CX 1000 drain were used and the shear strength was found to increase with increase in effective stress and voltage gradient. The results obtained by EO consolidation was consistent for soils with moisture content in the range of 60-140%. The study recommends that an electro-osmotic cell capable of measuring the temperature inside the cell be developed and samples with different OCR be tested for determining the effect of electro-osmosis on the OCR of samples.
