AbstractTo be competitive in today's global environment, firms are now placing emphasis on the role of manufacturing in their operations. It has been widely acknowledged that there should be consistency between the corporate, business, and functional strategies and that performance measures should be derived from strategy. However, conceptual linkages between measures and constructs related to manufacturing strategy has not been extensively explored. This study investigated the linkage between manufacturing strategy processes and manufacturing performance based on the methodology presented by Paul and Suresh (1996). Seven scales were used to represent the formulation and adoption, implementation and evaluation of manufacturing strategy. Competitive .. manufacturing performance was operationalised in terms of cost, quality, delivery and flexibility. Data were obtained from a questionnaire survey of high-technology manufacturing firms in Finland. Reliability analysis performed in the scales showed consistent measures. Factor analysis on the scales used revealed good construct validity. Canonical correlation analysis indicated that the manufacturing strategy processes are positively related to manufacturing performance. Results validate the findings of Paul and Suresh (1996) but the low level of significance obtained in this study emphasises the need for more extensive testing of the framework adopted. More items have to be incorporated in the scales used to strengthen the constructs presented. This research can be used as a springboard in further understanding how the patterns in which manufacturing strategies are developed affect the manufacturing performance of a firm.
