Abstract | Mangrove forests have an important function in coastal ecosystem, such as protection of waves erosion, organic matter source and protection of fauna. However, destruction of mangrove can be found everywhere in the world due to various reasons. For example, mangrove forests in North Coast of Subanng, West Java, Indonesia decreased because of environmental damage. Landsat TM were recorded m 9 July 1990, 30 July 1992, 5 June 1995 and 14 September 1997 used to detect the mangrove changes. There are three mangrove classes, namely, dense, moderate and sparse based on field observation and NDVI values. Soil characteristics in different Jandform and land use/land cover types were identified in order to know the effects of mangrove changes in mangrove soil. In totality, mangrove decreased during the period 1990-1997 where mangroves changec! into water bodies were dominant in Norih Coast of Su bang. Soil characteristics in moderate and sparse mangrove was not differ, however, these were different between soil covered by mangrove and water bodies in tenn of salinity and organic matter. Radiometric normalization of image is recommended in term to minimize the detection of spurious changes due to poor normalization. Other recommendations were improvement of supervisions and inventories of mangroves and reforestation of mangrove vegetation. |
