Abstract | In a highly dynamic industry like telecommunications where the customer's preferences are volatile, the identity of customers is changing and the technologies for serving customer requirements are continuously evolving, a company's own profile of resources and capabilities serve as a secure foundation for formulating long-term strategy rather than the pursuit for an externally focused approach. Due to this reason, interests have recently been increasing in the assessment of the potentials of firmspecific resources and capabilities for providing sustainable competitive advantage to the firm. This resource-based approach has been used in this research study to formulate a model for assessment of the competitive advantage creation potentials of the capabilities of a Value Added Network Service (VANS) providers in its operating environment. This model has been extended to the identification of the level of sophistication of a VANS provider's capabilities so that a direct comparison can be made between the VANS providers from different operating environments. Such comparison will help in determining the capability gaps and recommending plausible strategies for them. This model has been illustrated by carrying out case studies on three VANS providers, namely Telecom Finland (a global forerunner in the VANS sector), The Communications Authority of Thailand (a VANS provider in the fast developing Thai market) and Nepal Telecommunication Corporation (an emerging VANS provider in the Nepalese market that is just developing). |
