AbstractAir pollution is a primary concern in Bangladesh due to an intensive emission from man made sources. The city development authority recently has declared the Dhaka Metropolitan Region area in Bangladesh, and this area shows rapid increase in human activities and emission. Currently, there is no all-inclusive emission inventory for Dhaka Metropolitan Region. In this study, the emission inventory was developed for Dhaka Metropolitan Region. Major sources. The emission inventory included on-road transportation, non-road transportation (air, water, and railway transportation), industry (brick and other industries), open burning (agricultural waste /crop waste and municipal waste open burning), and dust emission from construction activity. Emission factors from the Atmospheric Brown Cloud Emission Inventory were used. The secondary data collection was used for the activity data. The emission inventory in 2019 for of particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), non-methene volatile organic compounds (NMVOC), carbon dioxide (CO2), Methene (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) were 73 kt, 28 kt, 41 kt, 47 kt, 163 kt, 0.5 kt, 2 kt, 2 kt, 24 kt, 5,313 kt, 20 kt, and 0.5 kt, respectively. The brick manufacturing industry and on-road transportation were the primary emission sources in the study area. Spatial distributions of emissions showed higher emission in the central area of DMR and some clusters of south part, west part, and north part of the study area. Four emission reduction scenarios were studied, considering the main sources of pollution in DMR. Emission reduction scenarios for on-road transportation by replacing pre-euro, euro I, II bus, trucks, pick-up, and PC with Euro IV and CNG vehicles and replacing the existing brick kiln with Improved Zigzag (IZK) and Tunnel Kiln (TK) were studied.
