AbstractThe construction industry has played a significant role in the Thai economy for a long time. It has helped to develop residential, commercial, and industrial buildings in the private sector. It has also contributed to improvement in people's lives by building infrastructure facilities in transportation, energy, water resources, etc. The economic boom during the past several years stimulated high construction demand in Thailand. Under this thesis research, the seven public construction companies were selected for studying in their performance and strategies during 1991-1997. From the result, most companies have performed their businesses well during 1991- 1996. Revenues and net profit grew at impressive rates. Nonetheless, in 1997, they confronted tough financial problems. The performance shown in the first three quarters of 1997 illustrated severe problems of these companies. By survey research, the customer's confidence in company's reputation was ranked first for competitive factors in bidding. In addition, the high growth of construction market is strongly correlated with company revenue growth. Financial problems have severely impacted the companies. To alleviate their problems, the studied companies tend to use passive strategies more than active strategies.
