Abstract | Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has been accepted as a promising solution for the target broadband network for the future Broadband Integrated Service Digital Network (B-ISDN). A wide range of services, characterized by different traffic behaviors, may share the same ATM transport network, where packets belonging to different calls are multiplexed together. Today the ATM is already closer to become a reality but the knowledge and understanding of effects of queue scheduling disciplines on ATM multimedia traffic characteristics are still limited. Control of congestion in B-ISDN network is an important and complex problem which must be solved to permit these networks to operate while providing good Quality of Service (QoS) to all users. It is difficult for a congested network to meet good QoS for real time multimedia applications which are either delay sensitive or throughput sensitive. Queue scheduling discipline is an important component of congestion control in network. This research work addresses the effects of queue scheduling disciplines on QoS when the network is congested. It has demonstrated that the Fair queue discipline performs better for ATM multimedia applications in this context. |
