AbstractCoons patches, obtained by smooth interpolation of four boundaries can be used for smooth interconnection between two (four) surfaces or patches. This interconnection requires knowing only the behavior of the edges of given surfaces to connect without describing the internal structure of the interconnecting patch. This scheme is good to use in CAD/CAM applications for solving the problem of merging independent surfaces which need to be connected in some spatial region. The study covers Bezier, Ball and B-spline boundary curves, nonrational and rational cases. The extension for mixed boundary curves and arbitrary degree is introduced. It is shown that the Coons approach to surfaces provides a very good way to develop a surface and interconnect the edges of different surfaces. It is also shown that any Coons patch can be converted to a Bezier/Ball surface. The formulas for computing the control points involved are given. All the results obtained have been derived mathematically and all algorithms devised have been given in implemented form. The comparison with traditional surface representations has been done.
