Abstract | Real-time applications involve sending and receiving bulky audio and video data. Since there are many kinds of data packets transmitted on the Internet, the quality of the real-time applications may not be acceptable for time-critical applications that require guaranteed real-time response. This thesis proposed an approach to improve the performance of real-time applications by reserving the network bandwidth for them without any change to the network hardware or network protocols. The reservation is performed on a collaborative set of routers by modifying the routing table within each router along a selected path. The reservation forces the communication links on the selected path to be used only for the reserving real-time application. The network is thus interrupted by a high priority application until the application is completed. When the application terminates, the routers are set back to their normal operations. The experimental results in this study have shown that, operating with the resource reservation program (ReservP) the throughput of the real-time applications is improved and the bandwidth guarantee for real-time applications can be achieved. |
