AbstractOne of the strategic uses of computer and multimedia technology in the educational system is to provide learners with the high effectiveness and efficiency of computerized learning environment. By the learner-centered approach, learners perform learning tasks defined by their own experiences, abilities, styles, and objectives. The educational software or courseware must be able to fulfill the learners' requirements of their individualized learning. The courseware should facilitate learning by including the appropriate guidance, navigational tool, and flexible learning environment. The major issues of effective learning tool development are the knowledge representation strategies, appropriate interactions between learners, and provided learning materials to motivate, engage, and navigate learners to achieve the desired objective(s). This research is concerned with making an attempt to accomplish these intentions by developing the data model and framework of a computerized learning system, which makes use of multimedia and hypermedia technology, based on an object-oriented approach. The developed mode l describes the learner characteristics (such as, learning styles, objectives, etc.), learning process, and learning content. This work shows the provided learning materials which can support the desired learning strategies and objectives of individual learners. Finally, a prototype of multimedia-based courseware, based on the developed model, was implemented and demonstrated to support the model. The constructed courseware can be delivered to learners in a stand-alone and local area network environment. In addition, as a distance learning material, this courseware can be accessed from the World-Wide-Web page on the Internet.
