Abstract | For the Second Bangkok International Airp01t (SBIA) project, various new ground improvement techniques had been developed and applied to improve the soft ground behavior. One of the ground improvement techniques, the prefabricated ve1tical drain (PVD) with surcharge and vacuum preloading was studied to evaluate the performance of this technique as viable alternative to the conventional surcharge techniques for ground improvement at the SBIA Project. The performance of a full scale test embankment constructed at Nong Ngu Hao site for SBIA project, by using perforated pipe drainage system and PVD 12 m length, was compared with three previous SBIA test embankments namely: TS l, TS2, and TS3 treated with Flodrain in 1.5 m spacing, CastleBoard in 1.2 m spacing and Mebra in 1.0 m spacing, respectively. The comparison was made with respect to settlement, lateral deformation, excess pore pressure variation and shear strength increment. Using back-analysed soil parameters and the laboratory tests results, the settlements of a full scale test embankment were predicted by the different methods. The back-calculated soil parameters were applied in settlement predictions by using the one-dimensional consolidation method, Skempton-Bjerrum (1957) method and Asaoka (1978) method and the results were compared with the field observation settlements. |
