AbstractThe Study concerns with the stability analysis of powerhouse cavern at Lam Ta Khong pumped storage project, the largest underground powerhouse project in Thailand. Stress analysis is the major part of the design of the underground powerhouse located at a depth of 330.50 m from the ground surface in the rock sequence mainly composed of siltstone layers with interbedded layer of Sandstone and alternating layer of siltstone and sandstone. The analysis incorporates the cases to see the effect of excavation of galleries and the draft gate hall on the powerhouse, the effect of support measures on stability and the parametric study for stress field, shape and layering. The real case analysis has been carried out by finite element method and the parametric effect of in situ stress fields, shape and the layering on the stability of the powerhouse cavern has been studied by two-dimensional and three dimensional boundary element analysis methods. The results of the real case analysis of the powerhouse sections is also compared with the measured values of the extensometers. The result obtained from the analysis confirmed the horseshoe and egg shape to be better than mushroom shape in terms of stress distribution. Parametric study of layering indicated better results with sandstone layer at the sidewall withJower extent of displacement and plastic zone. The non-uniform stress field with higher horizontal stresses on the walls of the cavern was found to have the maximum effect on the stability. The analysis results were found close to the measured values confirming the strength parameters taken for design.
