Abstract | Universities in most LDCs do not play a big role in the industry's technological development, while the industiy very much depends on the foreign suppliers. Therefore, the relationships between university and industry in LDCs are weak. For this reason, innovative approaches for improving existing and building new viable university-industry partnership should be created, designed and implemented. This study aims at comparing partnership approaches and types of linking mechanism in different countries, in order to identify an appropriate partnership model suitable for universities in LDCs. This study also will assess the possibility of implementing the partnership model chosen in Petra Christian University Surabaya, Indonesia, through a detailed analysis of internal university characteristics. The data were gathered from mailed questionnaire to selected universities in US, Europe, Australia and Asia and interview result with respondents from universities in Hong Kong and Singapore. On the other hand, there were some interview results with potential industry customers of Petra Christian University in Surabaya, Indonesia. The findings show that universities who had chosen Science Park as partnership model with industiy is the most successful, followed by universities who had chosen Membership Model and Agency Model. The characteristics of university and industry in LDCs (including Petra Christian University and industry in Surabaya) seem to fit best with no particular model implemented, but allow for the possibility to apply the Agency Model. The university should improve the technological capabilities, have more components of innovative capabilities and be able to create synergy among them. Having a champion in partnership and building commitment through integrating vision/mission, slogan, goals/objectives, strategy and reward systems are the other important conditions for success partnerships with industry. |
