AbstractDuring the course of a construction project, volumes of documentation are generated. These documents are important not only for job control, but also for dispute avoidance and future project guidelines. They should be handled in a timely manner and well organized for easy retrieval. However, the construction industry pays little attention to documentation management. Consequent problems include the ambiguous records which cause argument; wasted time in searching for documents; and low quality of information from the existing documents. This paper investigates the problems of current construction documentation management practices and proposes improvement. The viewpoint of the system starts from manual management, and then utilizes the computer technology to promote efficiency. A database system is developed. The goal of the system is to make the construction documentation attain its purposes that are easy entry, good storage, quick retrieval, real~time inquiries, and readable reports.
