Abstract | Most of the development projects have to undergo environmental impact assessments before being approved for implementation. With the rapid expansion of telecommunication infrastructures, environmentalists are suggesting that these should be subjected to the same assessment so as to assure the public. There had been many experts in the field of telecommunication who have been doing studies on its impact on the environment particularly on the health aspect. This research presents the study of the environmental aspects of telecommunication networks in the area of Metro Manila, Philippines. The telecommunication networks under study are the wired, microwave, satellite and cellular networks. The aspects of the environment included in this study are aesthetic, health and land-use. These environmental aspects are being assessed using the Lohani and Thanh Interaction Matrix whereby the importance and magnitude rating of impact of each aspect with respect to the telecommunication network are being rated by experts and analyzed to show its impact on the environment. For the cellular network in paiiicular, the indirect health effect of this network is assessed by estimating the probability of electromagnetic interference on the medical devicesas introduced by Tattersall. |
