Abstract | The design of distributed database (DDB) destined to store user information is a key issue in third generation mobile communication systems such as UMTS. In particular, the problem of determining the most appropriate DDB architecture for UMTS is critical due to the anticipated requirements of high distribution and adaptability of information. This thesis study presents the simulation model which allows nonbalanced and balanced hierarchical DDB architectures to be evaluated in terms of query rate, average queuing times, average service times, average search time, average queue sizes, number of nodes passed per node and their distributions according to a given user mobility and a given search operation. We also discuss the simulation experiments concerning a query operation ansmg from an access procedure performed on the DDB of a communication network covering urban, road and rural areas. The model enables different traffic intensities offered in the area queries come from and the external traffic offered from other DDB networks. The simulation results show that the performance of distributed database depends on the DDB architecture and the mobility behavior of users. The main problem in the DDB network is queuing times. Structures with more number of branches per node in the lower levels give the best overall performances. Nonbalanced hierarchical tree structure shows better performances than balanced hierarchical tree structure since it can arrange the UINs to cover the areas, which have different traffic offered. |
