AbstractCost, quality, reliability and delivery are the important factors that affect the competitiveness of any business enterprise. Quality has become the foremost among all these. Supplying quality products beyond customer expectations has become the objective of most world-class manufacturers. For supplying quality products, resources such as technology should be new and advanced, people should be committed and trained, and materials should conform to specifications. In this increasingly competitive, sophisticated, global market, manufacturing companies seek to differentiate themselves from their competitors by offering goods of a superior quality. In 1987 an internationally recognized series of quality system, ISO 9000, was developed by the International Standards Organization to help organizations assure product consistency to their customers worldwide. Among all quality management principles and systems, ISO 9000 series of standards have gained popularity and acceptance, not only in the EU, but also other countries in the world. ISO 9000 series of standards has helped and is expected of all business enterprises wanting to export their products. Thailand is one of the fastest growing economies in the world . The Electronics Industry in Thailand is growing faster compared to other industries. Companies in this industry are actively seeking ce1iification for ISO 9000 quality systems. Getting ISO certification is rather easy compared to maintaining the quality system. Many companies feel that once the certification is provided the job is over. But this should not be the case if one wants to retain the ce1iification. Implementation of ISO means, practising the ISO 9000 quality system requirements and getting certificate from the authorized body. Major factors that affect the implementation process were identified with other imp01iant priorities that are crucial for the success of ISO 9000 quality system. Pre-implementation and post-implementation activities of ten companies in the Thai electronics industry were studied based on a detailed questionnaire and interviews with quality managers and directors. Research findings and difficulties associated with implementation and maintenance of ISO 9000 in the Thai electronics industry were identified. Recommendations to the government policy makers and the companies are provided for further improvement of the system. The scope for further research was also suggested.
