AbstractThis thesis study investigates the use of VSAT network operating on currently available satellite technology as an immediate solution for the deployment of early ATM services. Our study focuses on a multiple access protocol, which can support various traffic mixed of A TM traffic while providing the required quality of service. The hybrid reservation/random access with movable boundary scheme is proposed as it can support both circuit and packet switched techniques. CBR and nrt-VBR traffic are offered to access the satellite channel on DAMA basis while UBR traffic with short burst length access the channel by random access. The movable boundary is applied giving the performance advantage to the UBR traffic. The performances of the proposed protocol are evaluated by simulation program. The result shows that the performance of UBR traffic in terms of transfer delay and throughput are considerably improved.
