Abstract | This study was undertaken to demonstrate the important role of training in ensuring effective technology transfer. The main purpose was to determine the level of success or failure of technology transfer, identify the faced problems, and more importantly, focus on the training aspect. For this purpose, a framework for studying the role of training in ensuring effective technology transfer was developed. This framework was used to carry out two case studies at CMB Saigon Limited and Lever Viso Company, two joint venture firms in the manufacturing sector in Vietnam. The results show that training has been mainly focused on ensuring effective transfer of machinery and equipment (technoware) so that operations can become effective quickly. Transfer of human skills (humanware), information for operations (inforware ), and manufacturing organizational arrangements ( orgaware) have not been adequately stressed in the training. The balanced development of all four components are needed in the long-run to ensure that the locals can eventually run the operations by themselves. Factors hindering the transfer and identified and some preliminary recommendations for removing these difficulties are made. |
