Abstract | This paper considers the error performance of Synchronous Digital Hierachry (SDH) in three different network topologies: ring, star, and chain. The network configurations and measurements are done using the SDH equipment and SYNFONET software provided by NOKIA The error performance parameters, which are in terms of Errored Second Ratio (ESR), Severely Errored Second Ratio (SESR), Background Block Error Ratio (BBER) and UnAvailable errored Second Ratio (UASR), can be measured in the Regenerator Section (RS) and Multiplexer Section (MS) levels while the SDH network gives service. These parameters measure the errors for different distances between node A and node B. The distance is simulated by using an optical attenuator. For error detection, the block length concept and the Bit Interleaved Parity (BIP) is used. The results of the error performance objectives for different SDH network topologies are concluded in Table 5 .1. This research study proposes the error detection method by using the error performance parameters measured in different network topologies and different attenuated signals. Furthermore, this paper refers to the extended idea of the computation link budget which considers the error performance parameters and distance of SDH network links in practical. |
