AbstractThe purpose of this research is to gain better understanding of the relationship between job burnout and engineers working in Sri Lankas construction industry. For this purpose, the most validated and widely used model comprising of emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and professional inefficacy were used in the burnout as dimensions. The Sri Lankan engineers scored a mean of sometimes experiencing the burnout in the past twelve months of their ca- reer in all of the three dimensions. The highest burnout rate high due to emotional exhaustion then followed by cynicism and professional inefficacy in Sri Lankan construction industry. Female engineers working for Sri Lankan construction industry are more vulnerable to job burnout than their male counterparts. Higher managerial level engineers were experiencing a higher burnout than the engineers in office and engineers on site. The contracting engineers reporting a higher burnout than the consulting engineers. This shows that the Sri Lankan con- struction industry is under burnout while majority of the respondents were in the process of burning out. This study will pave a way for the policy makers and construction practitioners as a foundation to redesign strategies targeting to lower burnout.
