AbstractThe Capacity and Level-of-Service (LOS) have proved to be important and practical indi- cators for transportation facilities around the world. The importance can be widely used in the transportation and planning engineering. The LOS rates the quality of the service of freeway weaving segments, ordered from best to worst conditions; A, B, C, D, E and F. This LOS rating has its foundation on quantifiable measures of effectiveness and on road users perceptions. Altogether, these measures define a LOS based on acceptable traffic operating conditions for the road users. The objectives of the research paper are to address to main goals, to study the process to determine the level of service and capacity of weaving sections in freeways by HCM 2010 and to develop MS Excel worksheets to facilitates the calculation process. The procedure of analyzing freeway weaving segments runs through eight govern- ing steps. The capacity of the weaving segment is computed in two domains; the capacity determined by density of the section and the capacity determined by the weaving demand flow. Ultimately the least value is chosen as the capacity of the segment. In order to compute the level of service, the average density of all vehicles in the weaving segment is computed. The LOS is determined by the LOS table provided by the manual.
