AbstractThis study discusses the quality of electricity supply at selected villages in Nepal and the use of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and 20W Fluorescent Lamps in place of incandescent lamps. It is found that quality of supply in isolated area is not suitable for the use of efficient lamps. However, if the quality of supply is improved, the use of efficient lamps would be economically attractive. From the utility perspective, efficient lamps would cost less than the supply side alternatives, even if the selected efficient lamps were subsidized up to 80% of the appliance costs. The addition of administrative costs for their market promotion would make negligible difference in their economic attractiveness. For the life line electricity consumers, it is found that CFLs would not be cost-effective but the use of 20W fluorescent lamp would be cost-effective.
