Abstract | Solar cookers have great potential to reduce the exploitation of forest resources and can also accomplish a wide variety of cooking tasks. Though a number of solar cookers have been experimentally studied, a rational look at the design of a box type cooker has been attempted by writing a mathematical model and theoretically examining the performance of the cooker. Based on the simulation results and the factors influencing the performance, a new design for a box type cooker was proposed. A conventional and a new type cooker were fabricated and tested in terms of no load, full load, cooking time, relative efficiency, influence of different vessels on the second figure of merit (F2) and influence of different loads on the second figure of merit (F2). Test results indicate that in case of no load test, F1 of new type was higher. In full load test, when three vessels of 10 cm radius per batch were used, F2 of conventional cooker was higher. The relative efficiency test showed that the total heat losses throughout a day in the new cooker was less than that of conventional cooker. Tests with six and nine pots of 10 cm radius per batch showed that the new cooker was more effective than that of conventional cooker because F2 of new cooker was higher. Overall, the new cooker had better performance as compared to the conventional cooker. The cooking performance of the new cooker was tested by three users. The performance and capability of the cooker have been highlighted and recommendations for improvement suggested. |
