AbstractThe purpose of this study was to identify the most reliable empirical method to forecast Evapotranspiration in the Songkhram River Basin, Thailand. Evapotranspiration was esti- mated and compared on their daily & monthly basis by using six reference evapotranspiration methods (ET 0). The methods used in this study are the Hargreaves, Hamon, Solar radiation (Rs) based method, Net radiation (Rn) based method & the Thornthwaite method. These methods are compared with the FA056-PM method which is standardized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Analysis of these methods were performed by using mete- orological data for 15 years (1990-2004). The estimated values by the Hargreaves method correlated well with the FA056-PM having R2 values of 0.88 & 0.62 at the two meteoro- logical stations located in the study area and their standard error of estimates (SEE) were 0.32 & 0.39 mm day-l respectively. The estimates by the Rs-based & Hargreaves methods showed that the temperature as an input variable was important as the FA056-PM method. Therefore, considering the reliability of the input parameters, the use of the Hargreaves & Radiation methods are preferred as potential methods for the estimation of E'Ij, if the FA056- PM method is not applicable due to lack of meteorological data.
