Abstract | Vietnam has been making progress in developing the basic infrastructure for its banking system and financial markets. Vietnam's banking system has come a long way since the country began its economic and financial reform program a decade ago. The number of financial institutions has risen rapidly, confidence in the banking system has improved, and private funds have increasingly found their way into organised financial markets, the Vietnamese banking system. The competition in financial markets now has been increasingly intense. Asia-Pacific Joint Stock Commercial Bank (APBank) has been newly established at the end of 1994. Over two years in operations, it has achieved large profits compared with its size. This research is to identify the strategies adopted in APBank and its success factors. In addition, this research also aims to develop the strategies needed for the bank. This study analysed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and competitive strategies of the bank. The results of the study revealed that APBank used all of three generic strategies, namely cost leadership, differentiation and focus. These strategies were utilised in combination or separately on different occasions. However, APBank stressed the importance of customer satisfaction by utilising human resources and technology to reach its goals. Unfortunately, technology has not been at the core of the bank's ability to provide services to its customers. This should be improved as soon as possible to remain competitive advantage of the bank. |
