AbstractMany location in remote areas are still not provided with electricity form the grid and may not be provided in the near future due to cost and operational difficulties. The other option is to use renewable energy systems at the location itself. Thailand is located in the tropical that provide a good solar insolation and wind resource to generate sizable electricity for rural community. The study deals with the investigation on feasibility of renewable energy hybrid system in Thailand in term of PV /wind combination base on the simulation by Hybrid2 model. The Hybrid2 simulation program developed by NREL has been validated with only one data set so far. In order to establish its capability and the difficulties of this model, two different data sets were used. The data at the AIT Solar House was obtained for 10 minute data step during 12 days, while the data at Sukothai was of 5 minute data step for 6 days. The simulation results and the experimental performance were compared and the discrepancies noted. After establishing the model capability, a feasibility on the renewable energy hybrid system in remote northern location of Thailand was made. The results show the cost of installation for this PV/wind hybrid system is about US$ 0.58/kWh in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai region. This could be extended to overall parts of Thailand, because of not much variation of weather across the country. The results of this study have been compared with other studies.
