AbstractGround water is a renewable resources and plays an important role in the development program all over the world. This is particularly important for the development of agriculture where surface water is very limited and seasonal. The study area ' Barind Tract' of Bangladesh has very limited surface water and non-uniform rainfall. So ground water exploitation for irrigation is being practiced for last several years through Deep Tubewells. In BARIND Tract, a number of tubewells have been sunk for pumping water for irrigation. However, no study in the past has been done to verify that whether the aquifer is suitable for exploiting water for irrigation or not, whether the present tubewells are operating properly or deteriorating, whether the design is correct or not. So this study was conducted for selected wells to know the present situation and to provide some important parameters for the planners for better decision in future and also for the maintenance of the existing wells. In all, 16 randomly selected wells were tested in this study. Step-drawdown pumping test was conducted to obtain the useful aquifer parameters and to evaluate the well performance. Analysis of the pumping test data was done to find out the transmissivity of the aquifer, well loss, aquifer loss, well deterioration index. At the same time the operational record of the wells was also analyzed to study the time based reliability. ยท From the study it was found that the aquifer in the study area is suitable for irrigation purpose. Some tubewells seems to be deteriorating with time but others are improving. Some design defects were reported due to improper selection of screen size and slot opening, which should be noted for the design of new wells in this area. Recommendations and future suggestions have also been given to take necessary action for the smooth running of the tubewells in the study area.
