AbstractThe objective of this study is to determine a possible use of ferric salts as an alternative coagulant of alum. In order to evaluate their performance, the coagulant was used in the pilot treatment, economic efficiencies, water treatment quality and sludge handling. Series of jar test were carried out to find optimum coagulant dose with raw water from Cho-Praya river. Upflow floto filtration with dual synthetic media (polypropylene and polystyrene) was operated to compare suitable filtration rate and removal efficiency of ferric chloride, ferric sulfate and alum respectively. The treated water was compare with Thai drinking water quality standard or WHO guideline for drinking water for difference parameter like turbidity, alkalinity, pH. Dewaterability of three sludge was checked by vacuum filtration, capillary suction time and time to fitter method. The results show that filtration rate was 8.0-9.0 m3 /m2·h for three coagulants in the suitable running time at turbidity breakthrough of 5 NTU. The dual media also showed advantage in backwashing process like no intermix, low headloss, less frequency of backwashing, easy to backwash and less amount of backawash water. These results conclude that ferric salts give more efficiency in water quality and sludge handling process.
