AbstractThe Huong river plays a key role for different beneficial uses of the people in Hue city, Vietnam. Various aspects of water quality management were studied for six locations of the main part of the river during the time from February to April 1997. The results showed that water quality of the Huong river, in general, was still good with the compliance of most parameters to the state standards. However a noticeable pollution in coliforms was found (fecal coliform: 330- 9300 MPN/100mL, total coliform: 1,600 - 46,000 MPN/100mL). Values of river discharge and velocity, deoxygenation and reaeration rate constants were determined experimentally in the context of hydrological complexity due to the tidal effect. Using the simplest Streeter-Phelps model, the waste assimilative capacity of the river was calculated under existing conditions as well as "worst" conditions. The waste load being discharged into the river at present was found to be still lower than the assimilative capacity of the river. Water Quality Indices (WQIs) were also developed for the river. Most of WQIs were within the range of "good" water quality. It is recommended that several strategies of water quality management should be established and further studies should be carried out for the Huong river.
