AbstractThis research is devoted to find a good method to develop an effective expert diagnosing system for the MAHO 600E 5 axis CNC milling machine. The domain knowledge is gained from analyzing the machine related technical documents and operating on the machine. The control system principle block diagram is drawn out from the analysis of the electrical diagram to ease the analysis work. The hierarchical function & behavior model is constructed to abstract the relationships of various functions of the MAHO machine. A hybrid diagnosing strategy is implemented in the diagnosing process. Both the deep knowledge form the design description analysis and the heuristic knowledge from the practical diagnosing experience are utilized in the diagnosing procedure design. A tree structure is used to organize the diagnosing knowledge. The structure of the diagnosing tree is well designed to make use of the results of the previous judgments in the later diagnosing process. Finally, the EXSYS professional version is selected to build the rule based expert diagnosing prototype system for the MAHO machine. The rules are organized into groups according to different functions. The firing order of the rule groups is controlled by landmark variables to implement the designed diagnosing procedures. The prototype expert system has the expertise knowledge to diagnose the malfunctions of the spindle drive system, each of the 5 feed drive systems, the automatic tool change system and coolant supply system. The method proposed in this research work can be used m developing expert diagnosing system for any type of CNC machine.
