AbstractWide variety of end products and limited availability of resources create multiobjective task of production planning and scheduling quite complex and frustrating. In this study, Sports Shoe section of Bata (Bangladesh) Ltd. were studied to achieve some desired goal by proper production scheduling policy. The general objective is to improve existing planning and scheduling procedure. The production order and the processing time for the products at various work stations are deterministic and the arrival patterns of the orders are static. Based on the present production system and collected data a simulation model is run for the heuristics (Shortest Processing Time, Longest Processing Time and Minimum Slack Time). The simulation model is build up in SIMPLE++ software. To select the best heuristics (dispatching rules) three performance measures mean flow time, maximum completion time and the number of tardy jobs are desired from simulation model output. Obtained results from simulation model are in normalised form and used for the analysis in goal programming. In goal programming multiobjective performances are measured with the help of single objective function. The output from goal programming is presented for visual representation to decide which heuristic performing the best compared to the others. The decision taken from this study will be helpful for the company for production planning and scheduling to meet the desired goals.
