Abstract | Although silicon is not considered an essential nutrient, its application is known to have beneficial effect on plant growth and development specially undergoing environmental stresses. This effect of silicon varies according to the growth stage of the plant. The effect of silicon fertilization on the growth of rice (Oryza sativa) under varying moisture levels was investigated in this research with a pot culture experiment conducted under greenhouse condition in a randomized experimental design. A local rice variety (RD 57) was experimented and a silicon rate of 300 kg/ha split into three treatments and a control was applied. All treatments received equal rates of N-P-K and urea fertilizers. Three moisture levels were imposed based on the field capacity of the soil. Evaluations on growth parameters were performed at the vegetative stage and the ripening stage. The results showed that there was no significant effect of silicon on any of the growth parameters covered in this study. However, descriptive results revealed a beneficial effect of Si application on majority of the growth parameters at water deficit conditions. Additionally, there was a significant effect (p < 0.01) of moisture level on all the growth parameters. Further studies are necessary to be conducted under field conditions with different silicon rates to verify the results presented in this study. |
