AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the antagonistic activity of probiotics isolated from Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) against food-borne pathogens and fish pathogens. Fifty- four isolates were identified using 16S rRNA sequencing. Twenty Tilapia gut isolates and twelve LAB isolates from another study was used as Test strains. All the thirty-two strains were tested against four food-borne pathogens and four fish pathogens. Agar spot method was used to co-culture the test-indicator strains and the strains which were positive was then subjected to spot on lawn assay. All the test strains, except three Bacillus sp. exhibited an inhibition zones. In spot on lawn assay, non-neutralized culture supernatants with pH less than 4.0 showed inhibition zones against seven out of eight tested indicators. The neutralized culture supernatants of any of the test strains could not inhibit the indicators, except for the positive control. The culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis was dialysed to obtain partially purified proteins, but concentrated products of the partial purification did not inhibit the growth of any indicators.
