AbstractVarious methods have been used in leakage detection projects of water supply systems, which can be used effectively if the leakage area is known in advance. Minimum night flow method together with the step tests, is the most widely used large scale method to identify and localize leakage areas. In this study a simple optimization model is proposed which can identify large leakage links and nodes in conjunction with minimum night flow method without going for step test results. The method needs measurement of some link flow rates and some nodal pressure heads. The model identifies the link leakages as well as the nodal leakages. Two assessment measures are introduced to check the accuracy of the obtained results. Extensive numerical experiments are carried out to investigate the accuracy of the proposed model as well as the sensitivity of the results with respect to parameter values. The method is applied to the water distribution system in Moratuwa city, Sri Lanka.
