AbstractThis study is concerned with Rural Water consumption and improvement in Water Supply and Sanitation in Laybor Commune, Tramkok District in Takeo Province, Cambodia. It describes the pattern of rural water use, and discusses the problems of the existing water sources and sanitation. It also evaluates the problems related with the existing water sources and sanitation in this province and investigates what socio-economic benefits can be obtained by improving the water supply and the sanitation. An attempt is also made to study the feasibility of an organized rural water supply system for Laybor Commune. In assessing the feasibility of an organized rural water supply system for Laybor Commune, the factors considered were the villagers interest in forming an organized rural water supply system, theic willingness in joining an organized rural water supply program and contributing towards it and their preference of agencies to undertake these improvement. Health and personal hygiene education are very important in rural areas. An improvement in health of rural people is only possible through supply of sufficiency safe water and with health education. Alternative designs of criteria for potable water wells sanitary latrines are proposed to improve the health in rural areas by preventing the transmission of communicable diseases related to excreta. The type of latrine that has been selected is very easy to operate and maintain in the rural areas.
