AbstractGrouper culture has aroused increasing interest in Vietnam because the fish has high potential in world markets. Up to now it has been in small scale farming, and farmers hesitated to invest heavily. This was related to many factors such as shortage of seed supply, lack of capital and poorly developed marketing channels. The present study was conducted to investigate the performance of grouper culture systems in Khanh Hoa province, to identify significant constraints and assess future potential. Technical, environmental and socio-economic aspects of grouper culture are discussed, and financial analysis is presented. Constraints and advantages of seed and feed supply are assessed. The study also provides a sketch of the marketing channels for local and export markets of farmed grouper. About 85 grouper farms with over 57 fixed cages and 43 earth ponds were present in Khanh Hoa province. Only wild seed was used for farming. The fish was fed with trash fish. FCR was low, that is, an average of 4.3 in pond culture and 5.9 in cage culture. In terms of economics, very good return was obtained from the farming. Profit margin was 43% and 64% for cage and pond farms, respectively. Return on labor was 66 and 170 thousands VND per man-day (or 1.1 and 2.9 millions VND per man per month) for cage and pond culture, respectively. The provincial government classifies local people with income of more than 350 thousand VND/man/month as rich, grouper culture, therefore, shows great promise for increased income generation in Vietnam. There was no clear evidence of seed supply shortage at the moment. However, it is essential to have a proper management of wild seed resource in order to exploit it efficiently and sustainably. On the other hand, research on artificial propagation of grouper seed should be conducted under local conditions to ensure a sufficient seed supply in the long term. However, its efficiency should be considered in terms of production cost and return for long term application. Otherwise, the shortage of seed supply will be problem for grouper farming development in Vietnam. Although good return was obtained from grouper farming in Khanh Hoa, the live grouper market channels in Vietnam could be improved. The producer's share of consumer price was 59% and moderate marketing margins were experienced, related mainly to the costs of handling and storage of live fish. Improved market efficiency will benefit the farmers. In terms of technique, knowledge of fish disease was a weakness of the local farmers. Government support by organizing training course will help to improve survival rate during the culture. Moreover, credit policy of the government should be paid more attention in order to facilitate access to industry, and improve poor people's income as the first priority.
